Mexty Launches AI Literacy Curriculum for UAE Schools

From the UAE AI Literacy Framework to classroom implementation

The UAE is moving beyond simply introducing AI tools into schools.

Through the UAE National AI Literacy Curriculum Framework (K–12), the Ministry of Education has defined a structured, age-appropriate progression designed to help students develop not only technical understanding, but also critical thinking, ethical responsibility, human judgment and the ability to apply AI safely and responsibly. The framework progresses from foundational awareness toward AI evaluation, design and real-world implementation, while remaining grounded in UAE values, cultural context and national priorities.

Its six guiding principles make the direction particularly clear: human governance of AI, ethical and safe use, progressive learning, critical engagement with AI systems, responsible participation, and cultural and contextual relevance. Students are expected not only to use AI, but to understand its limitations, question its outputs and recognize when human oversight is essential.

Abu Dhabi is already translating this approach into practice. ADEK's AI Literacy initiative now spans more than 170 private schools, with students progressing from age-appropriate logical and critical-thinking activities in the early years toward evaluating AI outputs, developing AI-powered solutions and, by Grade 12, designing systems and understanding responsible governance. AI is explicitly intended to support and extend students' thinking rather than replace it, with safeguards designed to protect cognitive agency, privacy, academic integrity and human decision-making.

For UAE schools, the challenge is therefore no longer simply which AI tools to introduce. It is how to turn this national direction into a coherent learning journey that connects:

  • Curriculum
  • Practical AI experiences
  • Teacher capability
  • Assessment
  • Governance
  • Evidence of student progression

This is where Mexty can help: by providing the editable curriculum templates, AI Literacy Labs, interactive learning experiences, assessments and secure learning infrastructure schools need to move from framework to classroom implementation, while keeping teachers and school leaders in control.

A structured KG–12 AI Literacy Curriculum

AI literacy should not begin with ChatGPT in secondary school. It should develop progressively, just like mathematics, science or language.

Mexty provides a complete curriculum structure from Kindergarten to Grade 12 that UAE schools can use as a starting point and adapt to their own educational model. A practical progression can follow:

KG–Grade 2: Discover AI

Students explore smart tools, instructions, patterns, humans versus machines and safe technology use.

Grades 3–4: Understand AI

Students begin working with data, rules, predictions, patterns, privacy and human oversight.

Grades 5–6: Understand how AI learns

Learners explore training data, algorithms, classification, accuracy, bias and introductory machine-learning concepts.

Grades 7–8: Question and evaluate AI

Students work with generative AI, misinformation, deepfakes, data quality, fairness, privacy and responsible use.

Grade 9: Use and challenge LLMs

Students investigate prompting, context, hallucinations, verification, bias and academic integrity.

Grades 10–11: Compare and design AI systems

Learners explore model comparison, human-AI collaboration, explainability, accountability and responsible system design.

Grade 12: Design and govern AI responsibly

Students consider governance, regulation, societal impact and responsible AI-enabled solution design.

The overall progression becomes:

DiscoverUnderstandUseQuestionEvaluateDesignGovern

The objective is continuous development rather than a collection of disconnected AI activities.

Editable AI Literacy Templates

Start with a complete curriculum without giving up pedagogical control

Schools should not have to build an AI Literacy curriculum from a blank page. But they should not have to accept a rigid curriculum either.

Mexty provides editable AI Literacy curriculum templates by grade. Teachers and school leaders can:

  • modify learning paths
  • reorder modules and sequences
  • edit course content
  • adapt examples to the UAE or school context
  • add internal policies and resources
  • replace or enrich activities
  • change assessments
  • introduce school-specific projects
  • adapt content for different learner profiles

A school may choose to use the complete curriculum. Another may integrate selected AI Literacy sequences into computing, science, citizenship, language or interdisciplinary projects. The structure is ready to use.

The pedagogy remains under the school's control.

AI Literacy Lab

Students need to experience AI, not only read about it

Some AI concepts become meaningful only when students experience them directly. The Mexty AI Literacy Lab turns abstract concepts into practical experiments. Students can:

Compare AI models

Ask different models the same question and examine how their responses differ.

Change the context

Give AI different roles or perspectives and observe how the answer changes.

Investigate hallucinations

Identify convincing but unsupported claims and verify them.

Explore bias

Compare outputs and investigate how data, framing and context can affect results.

Test trusted sources

Compare a general model response with an answer grounded in teacher-approved material.

Practice human judgment

Decide whether an AI recommendation should be accepted, challenged or reviewed by a human.

Instead of telling students that AI can make mistakes, schools can help them discover how and why those mistakes happen.

That is where AI literacy becomes a real capability.

Teacher Training

Teachers need confidence before students can use AI responsibly

Teachers do not need to become AI engineers. They do need enough understanding to guide students through questions such as:

  • Why does AI hallucinate?
  • How can prompting change an answer?
  • What makes a source trustworthy?
  • How can bias enter an AI system?
  • What information should students never provide to an AI service?
  • When is AI assistance acceptable?
  • When must human judgment remain responsible?

Mexty provides AI Literacy training paths for teachers covering areas such as:

AI fundamentalsGenerative AIPromptingHallucinationsBiasPrivacyVerificationTrusted SourcesAssessmentAcademic IntegrityHuman Oversight

Teachers can also adapt the curriculum templates and use Mexty's Interactive Course Creator and vibe coding for interactive learning to create their own activities without advanced technical skills.

AI supports the teacher. It does not replace the teacher.

Assess AI Literacy, not just AI vocabulary

A traditional quiz can test whether a student knows what an algorithm or hallucination is. It cannot necessarily show whether the learner can recognize a hallucination in practice.

AI Literacy assessment therefore needs to measure multiple dimensions:

Knowledge

Does the learner understand key AI concepts?

Practical use

Can they use AI appropriately?

Critical evaluation

Can they challenge outputs and verify evidence?

Responsible use

Do they understand privacy, safety, fairness and appropriate AI use?

Human judgment

Do they know when AI can assist and when a human must remain responsible?

Creation and problem solving

Can they apply AI concepts to meaningful problems?

Mexty Evaluations can combine:

QuizzesVisual recognition and hotspotsCategorizationBranching decision scenariosRandomized question banksConfidence checksComparison activitiesPractical projects

A Grade 8 learner, for example, might be shown an AI-generated answer and asked: “Which statement needs verification before you can trust the response?” An older student could receive an AI recommendation and decide whether it can be accepted, whether the underlying data should be investigated or whether human review is required.

The aim is to measure capability, not just recall.

Safe AI and Governance

A safe AI learning environment requires more than blocking inappropriate tools

Schools need clear answers to practical questions.

  • Which AI services can students access?
  • Which models are appropriate for different ages?
  • What student information can be shared?
  • Which sources should AI use?
  • Who approves AI-generated content?
  • How is academic integrity handled?
  • When must a teacher review an AI-supported output or decision?

Mexty provides a secure educational AI platform in which AI Literacy activities, trusted knowledge, assessment and learner evidence can be managed within a governed environment.

Mexty is ISO/IEC 27001:2022 certified, designed to support GDPR and EU AI Act requirements, and SOC 2 Type II certification is currently in progress. Privacy controls, traceability, trusted knowledge and human validation are built into the learning environment. Human control remains central before, during and after AI-supported learning and assessment.

AI-native should never mean AI-controlled.

Trusted Knowledge and Source of Truth

Teach students that fluent answers are not necessarily reliable answers

One of the most important AI Literacy skills is knowing when information should be verified. General-purpose AI can produce convincing answers that are incomplete, inaccurate or unsupported.

Mexty allows teachers to connect AI-supported learning activities to trusted, approved knowledge. Students can therefore compare general AI knowledge with trusted-source-grounded knowledge, investigate which claims are supported, where information comes from and how grounding changes the reliability of an answer.

Source verification becomes something students practice, rather than something they are simply told to do.

One infrastructure for the complete AI Literacy journey

AI Literacy is not only about curriculum. Schools need to connect:

CurriculumInteractive ActivitiesAI ExperimentsAssessmentLearner EvidenceAnalyticsGovernance

Mexty provides this layer through an AI-Native secure Learning Infrastructure. Schools can create, adapt, deliver and assess learning within the same environment.

For schools already using an LMS, Mexty also supports SCORM-compatible workflows and can operate as an LMS-compatible interactive learning platform. The school can keep its existing systems while adding a governed AI-native learning layer.

How schools can start

Schools do not need to transform their entire KG–12 curriculum immediately. A practical implementation can follow:

PreparePilotMeasureRefineScale
  • Start with selected grades.
  • Prepare teachers.
  • Adapt the Mexty curriculum templates.
  • Define governance and approved AI use.
  • Run AI Literacy Labs and interactive learning sequences.
  • Assess student competencies.
  • Review the evidence.
  • Then expand.

This makes implementation manageable while allowing the school to learn from real classroom experience.
