Knowledge Bases
Document repositories that ground the AI
What you can do here
A knowledge base is a collection of your documents that the AI can read and cite. Point an agent or a chat session at a knowledge base and its answers will be grounded in your real material — your brand guidelines, your graphic charter, your policies — instead of generic knowledge.
Create a knowledge base
- Click + New knowledge base and give it a name.
- Open it to start adding documents.
Add documents
- Drag files onto the upload area, or click to browse. Supported: PDF, DOCX, XLSX, PPTX, TXT, CSV, images, video, audio — up to 50 MB each.
- Each file is indexed into searchable "chunks". Watch the status badge: Ready means it's searchable; Processing means give it a moment.
- Use a file's ⋮ menu to rename, delete, or set how authoritative it is — Guideline or Source of truth (explained next).
Guideline vs. Source of truth
Every file carries a usage that tells the AI how to treat it. This is the single most important setting in a knowledge base — it's the difference between inspiration and instruction.
Inspiration. The AI draws on the file but stays free to adapt, blend and go beyond it — ideal for examples, tone and reference material.
Strict. The AI must follow this file to the letter — use it for policies, specs and facts that must not be paraphrased away.
- Guideline — the AI draws inspiration from the file but stays free to adapt and go beyond it. Use it for examples, tone of voice, and reference material.
- Source of truth — the AI must follow the file strictly and not paraphrase it away. Use it for policies, specs, exact figures and facts that must be reproduced faithfully.
When the AI cites a knowledge base, it weights Source-of-truth files above Guidelines — so mark your most authoritative documents accordingly.
Use a knowledge base when creating content
In Mexty Chat or any Block / Course editor, look for the book icon in the chat toolbar — that's the knowledge-bases selector.
The book icon in the chat toolbar — click it to choose which knowledge bases the AI reads this conversation. The badge shows how many are on.
- Click the book icon (📖 Knowledge bases) in the chat input toolbar.
- Check the knowledge base(s) you want. The badge shows how many are on.
- Every AI reply in that session is now grounded in those documents.
You can also attach a knowledge base to an agent so it's used automatically every time, without selecting it each turn.
Save a file straight from chat
Uploaded a file mid-conversation and want to keep it? Open the file's chip menu and choose Save to knowledge base — it's stored for reuse and auto-included in the current chat, so you never have to re-upload it.
Control who can use it
Open a knowledge base and use Attendees to choose who can query it in chat. Edit metadata updates its name and description.
Tips
- Group documents by topic into separate knowledge bases so the AI stays focused.
- Mark your most authoritative files as Source of truth so the AI follows them strictly.
- Keep it current — re-upload updated versions and remove stale files to avoid wrong answers.
